Apple Is Testing a 200MP Camera for the iPhone

Apple is testing a 200-megapixel camera sensor for a future iPhone, according to Digital Chat Station, a leaker on Chinese platform Weibo with a reliable track record on Apple supply chain information.

What makes this notable is how quickly things have moved. Three months ago, the same source said the 200MP sensor was only being discussed internally and no hardware had been seen. Now Apple is testing an actual component. That is a significant step forward in a short period of time.

The sensor being tested has been identified as the Sony Lytia 901, a 1/1.12-inch sensor, which is the same configuration found in the Oppo Find X9 Ultra. It is unusually large for a smartphone camera, and most phone makers use smaller sensors for their zoom lenses. Apple appears to be going in a different direction with this one.

There is some debate about where exactly this sensor will sit on the phone. Some reports suggest it is being tested for the telephoto lens. Others say it could be used as the main camera. Apple has not confirmed either way.

Either way, the resolution jump is hard to ignore. The current iPhone Pro lineup shoots at 48 megapixels across all three lenses. At 200 megapixels, you can crop a photo heavily and still have plenty of detail left. Zoom shots from a distance come out sharper. Concert photos, sports moments, anything taken from far away all benefit from having that much resolution to work with.

It is also worth knowing that a 200MP sensor does not always shoot at full resolution. Apple already uses a technique called pixel binning on its 48MP cameras, which combines multiple pixels together to produce cleaner images in lower light. The same approach would almost certainly apply here. Most of the time, your photos will be a processed version of that full resolution, not 200MP files every time you press the shutter.

One other thing to keep in mind is the camera bump. A sensor this size will likely require more physical space on the back of the phone, resulting in a larger camera module for iPhone users.

Apple Stayed at 12MP for Years on Purpose

For a long time, Apple kept its main camera at 12 megapixels while other phone makers chased higher numbers. That was not Apple falling behind. It was a deliberate call. Apple’s position was that image processing matters more than raw resolution, and for years that held up. In fact, iPhones consistently ranked among the best smartphone cameras despite lower megapixel counts than rivals.

Samsung has had a 200MP sensor in its Galaxy S Ultra phones since 2023. Apple is not first to this number. What matters is what Apple does with it.

The gap between good and bad processing has narrowed across the industry now. At that point, resolution starts to carry more weight. Apple appears to have decided the time is right to move into higher resolution territory.

    Which iPhone Gets It

This sensor will not arrive in the iPhone 18, due this September. Apple is testing it for the iPhone 19 Pro lineup, targeting a fall 2027 release. Morgan Stanley has also flagged a possible 2028 timeline in some scenarios.

As always with Apple, testing a component does not mean it ships. Apple evaluates camera hardware years ahead of any product launch and many parts never make it into a final device. What is different here is the pace. Going from internal discussions to actual hardware testing in three months is remarkably fast, and therefore suggests there is real momentum behind this rather than early-stage exploration.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max sits at 48MP across all three cameras today. If this sensor makes it to market, it would be one of the biggest single-generation camera upgrades Apple has shipped.
