Apple tvOS 26.4 Just Changed Your Apple TV Forever

    apple tvOS 26.4

Apple has pushed out tvOS 26.4 and this one is worth paying attention to. It is not just a bug fix round. There are real changes that affect how your Apple TV sounds, how you find something to watch, and how you read subtitles. Here is what is new and what you need to know before you update.

The Audio Problem Apple Finally Fixed

If you have a soundbar or an AV receiver connected to your Apple TV, you know the frustration. Every time your Apple TV switched between audio formats, like going from a Dolby Atmos movie into a stereo menu, the sound would cut out. Sometimes a loud pop. Dead silence for a few seconds. The first line of dialogue in a film already gone before your speaker woke back up. On top of that, many Sonos users noticed that 5.1-channel content played noticeably quieter than Atmos content, which made switching between the two a constant annoyance.

    How Continuous Audio Connection Works

Apple has fixed this with a new setting called Continuous Audio Connection. The way it works is that audio gets wrapped inside a Dolby MAT container, which stands for Metadata-Enhanced Audio Transmission, and that keeps the signal alive even when the source switches formats so the connection never drops. The setting is turned on by default after the update, so you do not need to go hunting for it. If you want to check, go to Settings, then Video and Audio, then Audio Format, then HDMI Output and you will find it at the bottom.

Based on feedback during the beta, the feature appears to have been built with Sonos users specifically in mind, though anyone with an Atmos compatible audio system should benefit from it.

What to Know Before You Assume Everything Is Fixed

A few things worth knowing before you assume everything is fixed. First, Continuous Audio Connection only works on Apple TV 4K 2nd and 3rd generation models and only when connected to an Atmos compatible audio system. If you have a 1st generation Apple TV 4K from 2017, this feature does not work on your device. Second, if your receiver shows an Atmos label when the source is not actually Atmos, that means it is incorrectly configured and you should consider turning the setting off. Third, some Sonos users in the beta reported that enabling it caused new problems with stereo content, so if you notice anything off after updating, that is the first thing to check.

Check your model before you go looking for the setting.

One more thing to note. Inside the Audio Format settings, Dolby Atmos has been renamed to Spatial Audio. If the label looks different to what you remember, that is why.

Finding Something to Watch Just Got Easier

Apple has added a feature called Genius Browse inside the Apple TV app. You will find it by scrolling down the Home tab. It shows a set of categories based on your viewing preferences, and the list updates regularly. Some examples include Bittersweet Family Dramas, Good for a Pick-Me-Up, Upbeat Workplace Comedies, Tense Psychological Thrillers, History Gets Hilarious, and Breathtaking Nature Docs. Each category gives you a list of titles to watch and when you tap on any title, it also shows you more suggestions related to that one.

The recommendations pull from multiple streaming services including Prime Video and HBO Max, not just Apple TV Plus. Netflix is not included. It has never been part of the Apple TV app ecosystem and Genius Browse is no different.

Genius Browse is only available inside tvOS 26.4. You will not find it in the iPhone or iPad version of the TV app.

One heads up. Genius Browse does not appear to be live in most regions yet. If you scroll through the Home tab and cannot find it, that is likely the reason and not a problem with your device or account.

Subtitles Are Now One Tap Away

Before this update, changing how subtitles looked on screen meant going deep into Settings and then into Accessibility. Most people had no idea those options even existed.

Now a subtitle style button appears directly inside the video player while you are watching. You can pick from Classic, Large Text, Outline Text, or Transparent Background without leaving your show. If you want to go further, there is also a Manage Styles button that takes you into Accessibility settings where you can adjust font, size, colors, and background in more detail. Look for the speech bubble button on screen to find it.

This works in any app that uses the default tvOS video player. Streaming apps that use their own custom video player will not show the new subtitle controls.

    Two Old Apps Are Gone

Apple removed the standalone iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Shows apps. Everything now lives inside the main Apple TV app. This has been coming for years and most people will not miss them.

Before you update, check your iTunes Wish List if you have one. Apple has already sent emails to affected users with instructions on how to move saved titles across, but if you missed that email, do it manually now. Move your saved titles to your Watchlist inside the Apple TV app first. Once you install the update, you lose your Wish List permanently.

    Performance and Stability

Apple also says this update includes general performance and stability improvements across the board, which is standard for most releases but worth mentioning.

    How to Update

tvOS 26.4 works on all Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models released since 2015. To install it, open Settings on your Apple TV, go to System, then Software Updates, and tap Update Software.

The audio fix alone makes this update worth installing today if you use an external sound system. Everyone else will notice the subtitle and recommendation improvements once they are in.
