Apple ‘AirPods Ultra’ May Do What AirPods Pro Never Could

Apple appears to be preparing a major shift in how its wireless earbuds work, and early reports suggest the next flagship model could break away from the AirPods Pro line entirely. According to fresh leaks circulating this week, the company is testing a new pair of earbuds that may be sold under a brand new name: AirPods Ultra.

If the rumors hold up, these earbuds could introduce a feature that no AirPods model has offered before, giving Siri a way to actually understand the world around the wearer.

A New Direction for Apple’s Earbuds

The headline change is the rumored addition of small infrared cameras inside the earbuds. These are not regular cameras for taking photos or recording video. They work in a similar way to the sensors used in Face ID on the iPhone, picking up spatial information about the user’s surroundings and sending that data back to Apple’s AI systems.

In practice, that means Siri could finally see what the user sees. Apple has been pushing its Visual Intelligence feature on newer iPhones, and the AirPods Ultra are expected to feed directly into that system. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has been tracking the project closely, recently noted that the cameras are mainly being designed to support Siri rather than to enable hand gestures.

That comment pushes back on earlier predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who had suggested in 2024 that the new earbuds would also unlock in-air gesture controls. Kuo also believes the cameras could improve spatial audio when paired with the Apple Vision Pro, which would make the earbuds useful well beyond the iPhone.

Why This Matters for Everyday Users

The AirPods Pro have always been about sound quality, fit, and noise cancellation. The first model arrived in 2019, the second in 2022. The AirPods Pro 3 launched last year with better noise cancellation, a heart rate sensor, and live translation through Apple Intelligence. Each update has improved the listening experience. But the earbuds have never been able to gather information from the outside world on their own.

Adding cameras flips that idea. The earbuds would no longer be just listening devices. They would become small, wearable sensors that help Apple’s AI tools work in a more natural way. For a user walking down the street, that could mean Siri recognizing a landmark, reading a sign, or offering quick context about an object nearby, all without pulling out the iPhone.

    The Move to ‘Ultra’ Branding

For years, the Pro label has sat at the top of the AirPods family. That may now change. Apple is reportedly planning to use the Ultra name across several upcoming products, including a foldable iPhone Ultra and a redesigned MacBook Ultra. Reports from Macworld and 9to5Mac suggest the company wants Ultra to stand for its most experimental and forward-looking devices, rather than simply its most powerful ones.

The Ultra brand is not new for Apple. It already appears on the Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra, and the company’s high-end M-series chips. Placing the new earbuds in the same category would help separate this device from the regular Pro line and signal that it does something the older models cannot.

    Pricing and Possible Launch Window

Reports suggest the AirPods Ultra could cost around $299. That is about $50 more than the current AirPods Pro 3. That price would reflect both the new hardware and the rumored H3 chip debut. This next-generation chip is said to power the camera-related features. It would also lower latency and improve audio quality.

A launch could come as early as September, possibly alongside the foldable iPhone Ultra. Nothing has been confirmed by Apple, and timing could shift, but the pieces appear to be falling into place.

    A Quiet but Important Shift

These reports may turn out to be accurate. If so, the AirPods Ultra would mark one of the biggest changes in the AirPods family since 2016. Apple seems ready to go beyond better sound. The goal appears to be turning its earbuds into smart, AI-aware accessories. These would understand the world around the wearer. For users wanting more than a small audio upgrade, this could finally be it.
